Sports Nutrition FAQ for Endurance Athletes

Q: Is there a place on your site where I can post questions related to training or nutrition?
A: The PBN Forum is the best way to have your questions answered by the experts and see many other Q&A’s from other athletes. These topics are checked daily by our experienced staff, so you know the information you receive is current and accurate.

Q: There are so many sports nutrition products available on your web site and in your catalog - how do I know which products I need?
A: If you are a competitive athlete, your body demands more nutrients than a person on a basic fitness program. We recommend that all athletes start with a Multivitamin and The next most important supplement is a Carbohydrate Drink to take during workouts lasting more than 1.5 hours, then a high-quality Recovery Drink containing protein and carbohydrates. Once the basic supplements are being used, then you may want to use a more advanced Exercise Recovery Supplement or Endurance Booster you select based on your unique needs and goals. Call or e-mail us at PBN - we will be happy to help you set up a custom sports nutrition program.

Q: How can I lose body fat or how can I increase fat utilization during training?
A: If you are looking to lose those extra few pounds or increase fat utilization during training, then you may want to try Endurox Excel. We have had good results with this formula. As always, these products should be used in addition to exercise to be effective.

Q: I feel so tired during weeks when I do a high volume of training - is there anything I can take to recover my energy?
A: Low energy levels can be caused by a number of different factors. The primary causes we find are lack of an adequate recovery program, and dramatically increased training volumes. As a competitive athlete, there will undoubtedly be times when you push yourself to the limit in order to improve, but pay the price in fatigue. Be sure you are taking in enough carbohydrates. Chronic carbohydrate depletion is a cause of lasting fatigue. In addition, use a recovery drink after your workouts, and take in supplemental carbohydrates during your workouts. Ensuring your nutritional needs are met will give you more confidence that your body can handle what you expect of it!

Q: I have three weeks until my big race - what can I take that will help me race faster?
A: We are often asked what can be done at the "last minute" to help an athlete perform at a higher level. Within the realm of legal supplements, there are a few products you may want to try:

  1. Creatine loading - if your event requires sprints or short, steep hill climbs that you must power over.
  2. Caffeine before and during your race. Champion Revenge and certain flavors of Accel Gel, Hammer Gel and GU all have caffeine that is a proven ergogenic aid.
  3. Try Optygen - it was developed based on the latest research on ergogenic aids, and may improve performance if supplementation is started at least two weeks prior to an event.
  4. Try one or more of the Endurance Boosters. These products were selected based on their ability to help improve endurance in longer races.
